What homeowners ask before wiring a smart home.
Wi-Fi mesh or wired Ethernet: which do I need?
Most homes need both. Ethernet runs from the router to a few mesh access points and to devices that never move, like TVs and cameras. The mesh covers phones and laptops. A mesh with a wired backbone is much faster than one relaying over the air.
Which smart lock works best?
Look for a lock that works with your phone platform and keeps a keypad as a backup, from brands like Schlage, Yale or Level. Wi-Fi models are simplest; Z-Wave and Thread models go easier on batteries. We check your door thickness and backset first.
Wired or wireless security cameras?
Wired PoE cameras get power and data through one cable, never need charging and record more reliably. Battery cameras are easier to add later. During a remodel, running cable to each camera spot costs little and is the better long-term choice.
Is it worth pre-wiring during a remodel if I buy devices later?
Yes. Running low-voltage cable, speaker wire and conduit while walls are open costs a fraction of fishing it later. Even if the devices come next year, the wires wait behind a blank plate exactly where they will go.
Do smart home devices need a monthly subscription?
Many work without one. Cameras can record to a local recorder, and locks and lights run through Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa at no cost. Professional alarm monitoring is optional, and we tell you which devices need a plan.
Smart switches or smart bulbs?
Smart switches and dimmers control the whole circuit and keep working when someone flips the wall switch, which bulbs do not. Bulbs suit lamps and renters. For a remodel, switches such as Lutron Caseta are the more reliable choice.
