How long it takes
A new composite deck takes about three weeks, and board delivery is scheduled first.
Reboarding an existing frame takes one to two weeks. Popular colors can take one to three weeks to arrive, so we order boards the day you sign, and file any permit at the same time.

Composite deck installation is the building of a deck surface from manufactured boards made of recycled wood fiber and plastic, or all-plastic PVC, fastened to a code-built frame with hidden clips or plugged screws. ProBuild Remodeling installs Trex, TimberTech, AZEK and Fiberon boards as a licensed contractor, following each maker's spacing and gapping rules so the warranty stays valid.
The service covers board and fascia installation, hidden fasteners, picture-frame borders, composite or aluminum railings, stairs and warranty registration, on a new frame or an existing one we have inspected and corrected. It does not include staining, sealing or painting, which composite never needs, or installing boards on a frame with rot or wide joist spacing that we have not been allowed to fix first.
It is for homeowners who want a deck they will not have to stain again, who are replacing worn wood boards on a sound frame, or who are building a pool or coastal deck. It is not for someone who prefers real wood, or whose budget sits under about $15,000 for a full deck, where pressure-treated wood is the honest choice.
The words you will see on your composite estimate
- Capped composite
- A wood-and-plastic core wrapped in a hard plastic shell. The cap resists stains, fading and mold on the deck surface.
- Cellular PVC
- A board made entirely of plastic, with no wood fiber. Lighter, cooler and more water-resistant than capped composite.
- Grooved board
- A board with a slot along each edge for hidden clips. Square-edge boards are used on borders and stairs instead.
- Hidden fastener
- A clip that holds grooved boards from the side, so no screws show on top. CONCEALoc and Hideaway are two examples.
- End gap
- The small space left where two boards meet end to end. Composite grows in heat, so the maker sets the exact gap.
- Joist spacing
- Distance between frame joists. Most composite needs 16 inches, or 12 inches when the boards run on a diagonal.
- Fascia board
- A thin composite board screwed over the outer frame. It hides the treated lumber and matches the deck color.
- Fade and stain warranty
- The maker's written promise on color and stains, usually 25 to 50 years. Voided if the install rules are skipped.

Is Trex or TimberTech better?
Both are the two largest makers and both last. Trex has a wider price range and strong value lines; TimberTech offers capped composite plus the AZEK PVC collections. The better choice depends on the color, heat and budget you care about, so we price the same deck in both.
Does composite decking get hot?
Yes, darker composite in full sun can get hot enough to be uncomfortable barefoot, like any dark surface. Lighter colors and PVC lines run cooler. We set samples in your own sun at the visit so you can feel the difference before you choose.
How long does a composite deck last?
Capped composite and PVC boards typically carry 25 to 50 year limited warranties against fading and staining, and structural warranties that last as long or longer. The frame under them is the limit, which is why we tape joist tops and use coated or stainless hardware.
Can I put composite decking on my existing wood frame?
Often, if the joists are solid, no more than 16 inches apart, and the ledger is flashed and bolted. We probe every joist and add or replace framing where needed. Reboarding a sound frame saves about 35 to 45 percent compared with a new deck.
Does composite decking scratch?
It can. Furniture legs, grills and dog claws leave marks, more visibly on solid, dark colors. Upper lines have harder caps, and streaked colors hide light scratches. Minor scuffs often fade over a few weeks of sun.
How do you clean a composite deck?
Twice a year with warm soapy water and a soft brush, or a cleaner approved by the maker. A pressure washer is allowed on many lines at low pressure with a fan tip held a foot away. Never sand or stain composite boards.
Is composite decking slippery when wet?
Most lines have an embossed grain that grips reasonably well wet. Around pools and on stairs we pick lines rated for slip resistance and texture, and suggest PVC, which holds less water on the surface than some composites.
What is the difference between composite and PVC decking?
Composite blends wood fiber and plastic under a protective cap; PVC is all plastic. PVC is lighter, cooler, more water-resistant and costs roughly 20 to 40 percent more per board. Both need the same careful framing and gapping.
