Asphalt shingle roofing · GAF · Owens Corning · CertainTeed
Three-tab, architectural and designer shingles look alike in a brochure and behave very differently on a roof. We bring real samples from GAF, Owens Corning and CertainTeed, show the wind and hail rating of each, and price your roof with every option in writing within 24 hours.
Ask which shingle fits your climate by text. A licensed roofer answers within 5 minutes during business hours and brings samples to the visit.
What happens after you text us
A typical exchange about choosing a shingle. You say what worries you about the weather, we ask about the HOA and the house color, and the visit is booked with the right samples in the truck.
We need a new roof and keep hearing about impact-resistant shingles. We had hail twice in three years. Is it worth paying more?
Hi Denise, Kevin with ProBuild Remodeling. In a hail area it often is, and some insurers give a discount for Class 4 shingles. Do you know if your policy mentions one? And is there an HOA that approves colors?
No idea about the discount. Yes, HOA, they want earth tones only.
Worth a call to your agent before we choose. I will bring Class 4 and standard samples in the approved browns and grays and price both, so you see the difference in dollars. Friday at 10 work?
Friday at 10 is good. Can you give me something to send the HOA?
Yes, the color sheet and product data for each option go in the estimate email. See you Friday.
What a shingle roof costs
Prices are installed totals for a roof of about 25 squares, which fits a 2,000 square foot two-story house, including tear-off and underlayment. Architectural shingles are what most homeowners choose, and what we recommend for most houses.

Averages from our recent architectural shingle roofs. Upgrading to designer shingles raises the shingle share to about four dollars in ten, because the product costs more and is heavier to carry up.

Standard or impact-rated shingles
Class 4 means the shingle survived a two-inch steel ball dropped on it under the UL 2218 test. It costs about ten to twenty percent more. These six facts tell us which one to recommend for your house.
| If this is true | We recommend |
|---|---|
| Your area has had hail claims in the last few years | Class 4 |
| Your insurer offers a discount for impact-rated roofs | Class 4 |
| Tall trees shade most of the roof from hail angles | Architectural |
| You plan to sell the house within five years | Architectural |
| Storms have already cost you one roof | Class 4 |
| Hail is rare where you live and budget is tight | Architectural |
How long it takes
Most of the calendar is choosing, HOA approval and delivery. The install itself takes one to three days for most houses, four for steep or cut-up roofs with designer shingles.

Visit day
We hold sample boards against your siding in daylight and price each shingle line in the written estimate.

Week one
You pick the line and color, we send product sheets to your HOA or historic board and file the permit.

Install days
Tear-off, underlayment, starter strip, then shingles nailed in the maker's pattern for your wind zone.

After the job
Final photos, the permit sign-off and the shingle warranty registered in your name and emailed to you.

The shingle lines we install
These are the asphalt shingles we quote most. Your estimate names the exact product and color, so you can check its wind rating, hail rating and warranty yourself before you sign.

GAF's flagship architectural shingle, with a wide nailing strip that helps it hold a 130 mph wind rating when nailed as specified.

Architectural shingle with a reinforced nailing zone called SureNail, rated for 130 mph wind and sold in a wide color range.

Two-layer laminated shingle with a thick profile and algae-resistant granules. Landmark Pro adds heavier weight and deeper shadow.

Owens Corning Duration Flex, GAF Timberline AS II and CertainTeed Landmark ClimateFlex pass the UL 2218 hail test at its top class.

CertainTeed Grand Manor and GAF Grand Sequoia are thick, heavy shingles cut to mimic slate or shake at a fraction of the cost.

Lines like CertainTeed Landmark Solaris use reflective granules to bounce back sunlight and keep attics cooler in hot climates.

Who installs your shingles
Every maker publishes its own nailing zone, exposure and starter rules. The crew lead checks them on the wrapper of the bundle before the first row, because a wrong pattern quietly voids the wind rating.

Your house is not average
The same shingle can be the smart pick on one street and a waste on the next. These are the cases that change our recommendation most often.
Where hail comes every few years, a Class 4 shingle often pays for itself through fewer claims and, with some insurers, a lower premium. We price it next to a standard line so you see the exact difference in dollars.
Price my impact-rated shingle roofWe quote shingles rated for 130 mph and up, installed with six nails each, sealed starter at every edge and taped deck seams. The wind warranty depends on that pattern, so we photograph it before the ridge goes on.
Price my high-wind shingle roofDark shingles absorb heat that the attic then holds. Reflective cool-roof lines and lighter colors lower attic heat, and some areas require them. We show both options in the same estimate with the energy facts.
Price my cool-roof shinglesBoards often want a slate or shake look without the weight or price of the real thing. Designer shingles usually get approval, and we prepare the product data and color samples your board asks to see.
Price my historic-look shinglesAssociations publish approved colors, sometimes down to one brand. We match your HOA list, send the product sheet for approval and wait for the letter before ordering, so nothing gets installed that must come off.
Price my HOA-approved shingle roofThree-tab costs less today but lasts fewer years and fewer suppliers stock it. A basic architectural line often costs only a few hundred dollars more on a small roof. We price both so you decide with numbers.
Compare my three-tab and architecturalBuyers and appraisers notice a new architectural roof in a neutral color, not a designer upgrade. We recommend the mid line in a gray or brown blend that suits most houses, and give you the transferable warranty papers.
Price my pre-sale shingle roofOn a steep, visible roof the shingle is part of the facade. Designer lines with deep shadow lines, copper valleys and matching ridge pieces change how the whole house reads from the street. Each upgrade is priced alone.
Price my designer shingle roofWhat this service is
Asphalt shingle roofing is a roof covering made of overlapping shingles built from a fiberglass mat coated in asphalt and mineral granules, nailed over underlayment on a sloped wood deck. It is the most common roof in the United States. ProBuild Remodeling installs three-tab, architectural, impact-rated and designer lines from GAF, Owens Corning and CertainTeed.
The service covers choosing the shingle line and color with samples on site, tear-off, underlayment, ice and water shield, starter strip, shingles nailed to the maker's pattern for your wind zone, hip and ridge caps, and warranty registration. It does not cover low-slope sections under 2/12 pitch, which need a membrane, or roofing materials other than asphalt.
It suits most sloped roofs on single-family homes and townhouses, from homeowners who want the lowest sound price to those who want a slate look without slate weight. It is not the best choice for roofs flatter than 2/12, for owners who want a 50-year roof, which points to metal, or for houses where the HOA requires tile.
Questions about asphalt shingles
Three-tab shingles are one flat layer cut into three tabs, rated for roughly 60 to 70 mph winds and 15 to 20 years. Architectural shingles are two laminated layers, thicker and heavier, rated for 110 to 130 mph and 25 to 30 years. They cost about 10 to 20 percent more installed.
Three-tab lasts 15 to 20 years, architectural 25 to 30, and designer lines 30 or more. Heat, poor attic ventilation and shade that keeps the roof wet shorten those numbers. Good ventilation and correct nailing are what let a shingle reach its rated life.
All three make reliable architectural shingles with similar wind ratings. The differences are color range, nailing strip design and warranty terms. Installation quality matters more than brand, so we recommend the line whose colors suit your house and is stocked locally.
In hail areas usually yes: Class 4 shingles resist cracking, and some insurers lower premiums or deductibles for them. They add roughly $2,000 to $4,000 on a typical roof. Where hail is rare, a standard architectural shingle is the better value.
Installed with tear-off and underlayment, three-tab runs about $350 to $450 per square, architectural $450 to $650 and designer $700 to $1,100. A square is 100 square feet of roof, and a 2,000 square foot two-story house usually has about 25 squares.
Yes, a little. Dark shingles absorb more sun and run hotter, which warms the attic. Light colors and reflective cool-roof lines stay cooler. The effect is largest in hot, sunny climates and on houses with ducts in the attic.
The streaks are algae that feed on limestone filler in the shingle and grow in shade and humidity. Most architectural lines now include copper granules that slow it for 10 to 25 years, depending on the maker. The streaks are cosmetic, not a leak risk.
Shingles need at least a 2/12 pitch, meaning two inches of rise per foot, with a double underlayment between 2/12 and 4/12. Flatter sections such as porch roofs need a membrane roof instead, which we quote as a separate line.
