Why flooring projects go wrong
Most floor failures start under the floor, not on it.
Gapping planks, cracked tile and cupped hardwood are almost never the product's fault. They come from a subfloor that was not flat, stiff or dry, and from a quote that never priced fixing it.
Wood or plank over moisture
A damp slab or crawlspace cups hardwood and lifts planks. We meter the subfloor before choosing a material, and add a vapor barrier or pick a waterproof floor when it reads high.
Buying new when the old floor was fine
Many houses hide oak under carpet that only needs refinishing, for a third of new hardwood. We check what is underneath and tell you in writing before anything is ordered.

Flooring questions
What people ask before choosing a flooring service.
Should I refinish my hardwood or replace it?
Refinish if the boards have enough wood above the tongue and are not cupped or stained through; it costs about a third of new hardwood. Replace if nail heads or tongues show, or large areas are water damaged. We check a floor vent and the worst spot before recommending either.
Is luxury vinyl plank better than hardwood?
Vinyl plank is waterproof, quieter with a pad and handles pets and basements better, at roughly half the installed cost. Hardwood is real wood, can be refinished for decades and usually adds more resale value. Many homes use hardwood in living areas and vinyl plank in kitchens and basements.
Which floor is best for a kitchen?
Porcelain tile and rigid-core vinyl plank both handle spills and dropped pans well. Tile lasts longest and suits radiant heat; vinyl plank is warmer, softer underfoot and faster to install. Engineered hardwood works if you wipe spills quickly.
Which flooring service takes the least time?
A hardwood screen and recoat takes one day. One room of vinyl plank, laminate or carpet takes one to two days. A full refinish takes three to five days, a main floor of tile about the same, and a whole-house hardwood install two to three weeks.
Can different floors meet without a bump at the doorway?
Usually. We plan heights during the estimate, build up or grind the subfloor where needed and use flush transition strips, so tile, wood and vinyl can meet with little or no lip, which matters for anyone with a walker or a robot vacuum.
Do I have to move out while floors are installed or refinished?
Rarely. Plank, carpet and tile go in room by room, and we keep a path open. For a full refinish, plan to stay off the sanded rooms for about a day per coat, and with oil-based finish many families spend a night elsewhere.
