- The height you step over to get into the tub, usually 3 to 7 inches, compared with about 15 inches for a regular tub.
- Inward swing door
- A door that opens into the tub. It saves floor space and seals tighter as water presses on it, but needs room to step around it.
- Outward swing door
- A door that opens into the bathroom. Easier to get in and out, better for wide models, but needs clear floor in front.
- Quick-drain pump
- A pump that empties the tub in about two minutes. Without it, draining can take five to eight minutes while you sit.
- Hydrotherapy jets
- Water jets that massage muscles. Air jets release gentle bubbles. Therapy tubs may have one type or both together.
- GFCI circuit
- A dedicated electrical line with a safety breaker that shuts off instantly if it senses water, required for jets and heated seats.
- Tank capacity
- How many gallons your water heater holds. It should be at least two thirds of the tub's volume to fill it warm.
- Wall surround
- The panels around the tub that keep water off the walls. Acrylic goes in quickly; tile takes longer and costs more.

How much does a walk-in tub cost installed?

How long does it take to fill and drain a walk-in tub?
Filling usually takes 6 to 10 minutes and draining 2 to 8, depending on the faucet and whether the tub has a quick-drain pump. You sit inside during both, which is why a heated seat and a fast-fill faucet matter more than people expect.
Can a walk-in tub replace a regular tub in the same space?
Yes. Most walk-in tubs are made in the standard 60 by 30 inch size to fit an existing alcove. Compact models fit shorter spaces. We measure the alcove, the bathroom door and the hallway before recommending a model.
Do walk-in tub doors leak?
A properly leveled tub with a good seal does not. Leaks usually come from a tub set out of level or a seal damaged in delivery. We level the tub on the subfloor and test the door seal with a full fill before we leave.
Do I need a bigger water heater for a walk-in tub?
Often yes. Your heater should hold at least two thirds of the tub's volume, so a 60-gallon tub needs about a 40 to 50 gallon heater at full temperature. We check the label at the visit and price an upgrade separately if needed.
Is a walk-in tub worth it compared with a walk-in shower?
It is worth it if soaking eases pain or you truly enjoy a bath and can sit through the fill and drain. If you mainly want to get clean safely, a curbless shower with a seat costs about the same, has no wait and suits a wheelchair later.
Does Medicare cover a walk-in tub?
Original Medicare does not cover walk-in tubs, since they are not considered medical equipment. Some Medicaid waivers, veterans grants and state programs may help with part of the cost. We provide an itemized price that can be submitted to them.
How do you clean a walk-in tub with jets?
Run the tub's cleaning cycle with a jet cleaner about once a month, and wipe the door seal after each bath. Air-jet models need less cleaning than water jets. We show you the routine on the day of the first bath.
