What people ask before choosing a carpentry service.
What is the difference between rough carpentry and finish carpentry?
Rough carpentry, or framing, builds the structure you never see: studs, beams, headers and joists. Finish carpentry is the visible woodwork added after drywall and floors, like baseboard, casing, crown and doors. Most remodels need both, done in that order.
Should built-ins go in before or after the trim?
Built-ins go first, then the trim is run around them so baseboard and crown flow into the piece as if it was always there. Doing trim first means cutting it out again later, which wastes material and leaves patches.
Can one carpenter do framing, trim and built-ins?
Some can, but the work rewards specialists. Framers work fast to structural tolerances; finish carpenters and cabinetmakers work to a sixteenth of an inch. We send the right carpenter for each part, under one contract.
Which carpentry job takes the least time?
A single room of new baseboard and casing, usually one to two days. Opening a non-bearing wall takes one to three days. A bearing wall with a beam takes about a week, and a wall of built-ins one to three weeks, mostly in the shop.
Do I need a permit for carpentry work?
Trim and built-ins usually need none. Framing that changes structure, removes a wall, adds a bedroom or finishes a basement usually needs one, plus an inspection before drywall. We check your town's rule at the visit.
Is carpentry priced the same in every state?
No. Labor rates and lumber prices vary by region, so the ranges on these pages are typical, not local. Your written estimate is priced for your address after a carpenter has measured the job.
