With a dog and a toddler I would look at a rigid-core vinyl plank, it is waterproof and scratch resistant. Brittle square tiles in an older home should be tested before anyone pulls them. Can you send a photo of a corner where a tile has chipped?

Tear out the old floor in most houses. Install over it only when it is flat and bonded.
Floating a new floor over the old one saves $1 to $2 a square foot in removal, but it raises the floor, can trap moisture and hides problems. At the measure we check six things and tell you in writing which way your floor should go.

How long it takes
A main floor takes two to four days, and you can walk on vinyl plank the same evening.
One room takes a day or two. A whole house takes one to two weeks, done in sections so you always have a bedroom and a path to the kitchen. Carpet and floating floors need no drying time.

What your floor is made of
Every floor is named by brand and thickness, so two quotes can be compared.
The same word on two quotes can mean very different floors. We list the brand, the wear layer or pile weight and the underlayment, because that is where a low price usually hides a thinner product.
Luxury vinyl plank
Rigid-core plank from COREtec or Shaw Floorte with a 12 to 20 mil wear layer. Waterproof, quiet with a pad, and tough against dog nails.
Laminate
Pergo and Mohawk RevWood laminate with a water-resistant core and a realistic wood print. Harder than vinyl on the surface, a bit louder.
Engineered wood
Real hardwood veneer on a plywood core, from brands like Bruce and Mohawk, often floated or glued. Warm like wood, stable in most rooms.
Carpet
Shaw and Mohawk SmartStrand carpet in nylon or triexta, on an 8-pound pad. Soft and quiet for bedrooms and stairs, priced by the square yard.
Underlayment
Foam, cork or rubber pads matched to the floor, some with an attached vapor barrier, to cut footstep noise and cushion joints.
Floor leveling compound
Self-leveling underlayment from Ardex or Custom Building Products poured into low spots, so planks lock flat and do not flex.

Flooring installation is the removal of an existing floor covering and the installation of a new one, such as luxury vinyl plank, laminate, engineered wood or carpet, including subfloor repair and leveling, underlayment, transitions and baseboard. ProBuild Remodeling performs it as a licensed contractor and prices it as a project total, not a per-foot rate.
The service covers one room, a continuous main floor or most of a house, stairs included. It covers choosing the right material for each room and preparing the subfloor so it stays flat. Solid hardwood nailed down, sanding and refinishing existing wood, and tile floors each have their own service page. Every job ends with a walkthrough and care instructions for the floor you chose.
It is for homeowners who just bought a house with tired floors, families who need something waterproof and pet-proof, and people preparing to sell. It is not for a single plank or small carpet patch, which a handyman repairs for less, or for buying material to install yourself.
The words you will see on your flooring estimate
- Luxury vinyl plank
- A layered plank with a printed wood or stone look, a clear wear layer on top and a rigid core that is waterproof.
- Wear layer
- The clear top coat on vinyl plank, measured in mils. Twelve mils suits most homes; twenty mils suits busy homes with pets.
- Floating floor
- A floor that clicks together and rests on the underlayment without nails or glue, free to expand and contract.
- Subfloor
- The plywood or board layer screwed to the joists that every finished floor sits on. It has to be solid and flat.
- Self-leveler
- A pourable cement compound that fills low spots and dries flat, so planks do not flex or separate at the joints.
- Transition strip
- The piece that joins two floors or finishes an edge at a doorway, a tile floor or the top of a stair.
- Expansion gap
- The small space left at the walls under the baseboard so a floating floor can move with humidity without buckling.
- Square yard
- The unit carpet is sold in, nine square feet. Your estimate converts it to square feet so you can compare it with plank.

How much does it cost to install new flooring?
Installed, including removal and prep, expect about $6 to $10 a square foot for luxury vinyl plank or laminate, $4 to $7 for carpet and $9 to $15 for engineered wood. One room runs $2,000 to $5,000, a main floor $6,000 to $16,000 and most of a house $15,000 to $38,000.
Which is better, luxury vinyl plank or laminate?
Vinyl plank is fully waterproof and quieter, so it wins in kitchens, baths, basements and homes with pets. Laminate has a harder surface that resists scratches and often looks more like real wood, but most laminate only resists water for a few hours. Many homes use both.
Can new flooring go over my old floor?
Sometimes. A floating floor can go over one flat, well-bonded layer of sheet vinyl or tile. It should never go over carpet, cushioned vinyl or a floor with soft spots. Old tiles that may contain asbestos are often safer covered than removed, after testing.
How long does flooring installation take?
One room takes one to two days and a main floor of about 1,000 square feet takes two to four days. A whole house takes one to two weeks, done in sections. You can walk on vinyl, laminate and carpet right away; glued floors need a day.
Does the flooring need to acclimate before installation?
Laminate and engineered wood usually sit in the house for 48 hours so they adjust to its humidity; the maker's instructions set the time. Rigid-core vinyl plank needs little or no acclimation. Carpet needs none. We plan delivery so it never delays your start.
What is the best flooring for a house with dogs?
Rigid-core luxury vinyl plank with a wear layer of 20 mils is the most forgiving: waterproof, quiet and hard to scratch. A matte, textured finish hides marks better than a glossy one. For bedrooms, triexta carpet like SmartStrand resists stains from accidents.
Do I need to move my furniture before the flooring crew comes?
No. Moving furniture is included in our main floor and whole-house tiers. Please empty china cabinets, bookcases and closet floors, and unplug electronics. Pianos, safes and gun cabinets need a specialty mover, which we can help schedule.
Should the same floor run through the whole main level?
In most houses, yes. One floor without breaks makes rooms feel larger and removes trip edges at doorways. The exceptions are full bathrooms and entries, where tile often makes more sense, joined to the main floor with a flush transition.
