Standard vinyl suits sheltered walls. Insulated vinyl earns its cost in sun and wind.
Insulated vinyl costs roughly 40 to 60 percent more than a standard panel. It pays off on walls that bake in the sun, face hard wind or hail, or were never flat to begin with. We walk each wall with you and write down the grade we would use.

How long it takes
Most vinyl jobs take one to two weeks, start to final magnet sweep.
A one-story ranch often finishes in four to six working days, a two-story colonial in eight to twelve. Vinyl is light and quick to hang, so trim work around windows takes most of the time.

Vinyl shakes and batten
Polymer shakes, scallops and board and batten for gables and accents. They cost more per square but break up a large plain wall.
Soffit and trim coil

Vinyl siding installation is the fitting of PVC siding panels, trim and soffit over a weather-resistant barrier on a house's exterior walls. The panels are hung loosely on nails so they can expand and contract with temperature. ProBuild Remodeling installs vinyl as a licensed contractor, naming the brand, product line and panel thickness in every estimate.
The service covers removal of one layer of old siding, housewrap and flashing, standard, premium or insulated vinyl panels, corners, J-channel, soffit, fascia and aluminum-wrapped window trim. It does not include replacing windows, gutters or large sections of rotted framing, which are priced separately when found. Other siding materials have their own pages.
It is for homeowners who want low-upkeep siding at a moderate price, including owners of rentals and houses being prepared for sale. It is not the best choice for historic districts that require wood, houses near wildfire zones where noncombustible siding is required, or owners who want to repaint in new colors later.
The words you will see on your vinyl estimate
- Gauge
- The panel thickness in inches, from about .040 on budget lines to .055 on the thickest. Thicker panels stay flatter.
- Insulated vinyl
- A vinyl panel bonded to contoured foam. Stiffer, more dent resistant and adds about R-2 to R-3 to the wall.
- Starter strip
- The metal or vinyl strip nailed level at the bottom of the wall that locks in the first course of siding.
- Nail hem
- The top edge of a panel with slots for nails. Nails go in the center of each slot and are left slightly loose.
- Expansion gap
- The quarter inch or so left at each channel so the panels can grow in summer heat without buckling.
- Trim coil
- Thin aluminum sheet bent on site to wrap window and door casings so no wood is exposed to weather.
- Mounting block
- A molded vinyl block for lights, vents and hose bibs so they sit flat and do not crack the siding.
- Wind rating
- The wind speed a panel is tested to resist, listed by the maker. Higher numbers suit exposed or coastal lots.

How much does vinyl siding cost for a 2,000 square foot house?
Usually $14,000 to $26,000 for premium vinyl including removal of old siding, wrap and trim. Standard vinyl on the same house runs about $11,000 to $18,000, and insulated vinyl $24,000 to $36,000, depending on stories, gables and windows.
What thickness of vinyl siding should I get?
At least .044 inch for most houses. Standard .040 to .042 panels are fine on shaded one-story walls, but thicker panels stay straighter in sun and resist wind and hail better. The gauge should be printed on your estimate and on the box.
Is insulated vinyl siding worth the extra cost?
It is on sunny, windy or wavy walls and on houses with thin wall insulation. It adds about R-2 to R-3, resists dents and looks flatter. On shaded walls of a rental, standard vinyl usually makes more sense for the money.
Why does some vinyl siding look wavy?
Most waves come from panels nailed too tight, so they cannot expand, or from thin panels on uneven walls. Hanging each panel loose with a gap at every channel, and using thicker or insulated vinyl on uneven walls, prevents it.
Can vinyl siding be installed over old siding?
Over flat, sound wood or old vinyl, sometimes, with a new barrier and furring where needed. Over rotted, wavy or aluminum siding we remove it first. We probe the wall at the visit and tell you which applies.
How long does vinyl siding last?
Good vinyl lasts 30 to 40 years or more, and most makers offer a lifetime limited warranty to the original owner. Color fade is the usual reason people replace it, which is why darker colors now come with fade-resistant pigments.
Which vinyl siding brands do you install?
Mostly CertainTeed, Mastic and Royal, because they have wide color ranges and strong warranties. We can price other brands you prefer, and the estimate always names the exact product line and thickness.
Can vinyl siding be painted later?
It can, with paint made for vinyl in a color no darker than the original, or the panels can warp in the sun. Most owners never paint it; choosing the color well at the start matters more than with wood.
